Pirate Water Taxi Announces Major Fleet Expansion

Major Fleet Expansion

Pirate Water Taxi

TAMPA, FLA (July 10, 2019) – Pirate Water Taxi announces major fleet expansion, representing $1.6 million dollar investment and the construction of three new vessels. Pirate Water Taxi will be adding a 100-passenger and two 20-passenger water taxis in late 2019.

“This fleet expansion represents the first new build in our fleet and takes into account what we have learned over the last 3.5 years from our customers and Pirate Captains. The 100-passenger water taxi will be the new fleet standard, fully equipped with a bar, outside and indoor climate controlled seating and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant restrooms,” says Pirate Water Taxi President and CEO Troy Manthey.

On July 1, 2019 the keel was laid on the new 100-passenger water taxi at NewCastle Shipyards in Palatka, Fla. The vessel will be constructed of aluminum and features Tier 3 Volvo Diesel propulsion system and Tier 3 Northern Lights Generators. Florida Naval Architects specifically designed the vessel for Tampa. Scheduled completion is December 2019.

The two 20-passenger water taxis are presently under construction in Plant City, Fla. by Pirate Water Taxi Marine Department. Pirate Water Taxi acquired 12 of San Antonio’s river barges and is rebuilding two vessels to be U.S. Coast Guard certified for 20-25 passengers. These vessels were acquired for their low profile, only 8’ of air draft, allowing transit under the Meridian Bridge adjacent to the Tampa History Center. The Meridian bridge prevents the existing fleet of water taxis from reliably servicing Sparkman Wharf and the Florida Aquarium stop (opening fall 2019) because of its low proximity to the water, only 8’6” in high tide. The Meridian Bridge is the lowest bridge on the water taxi route at 8’6” high tide, while other river bridges are 12’ at high tide. With the addition of these two low profile water taxis, Pirate Water Taxi will be able to service stops at Sparkman Wharf and the Florida Aquarium daily.
Pirate Water Taxi debuted in downtown Tampa in 2016 with a fleet of four water taxis. The ever-growing landscape of Downtown Tampa has helped contribute to the company’s success. With steady year-over-year growth.

The fleet additions will be complete and ready for cruising Tampa just in time for the ever so popular River of Lights Cruises in December for the holidays.
